Local Smart Card Solutions for Wyse Winterm 3000 Series Ensures Only Authorized Users Can Access Server-Based Information

San Jose, CA – 2001/10/02 - Wyse® Technology, the worldwide leader in thin-client computing, today announced the first in a line of Wyse Winterm™ Local Smart Card Solutions, providing an added layer of security to an already secure thin client/server-based computing environment. The Winterm Local Smart Card Add-on Software and Smart Card Manager software are used in conjunction with Schlumberger Cyberflex Smart Cards, delivering better security than passwords alone can provide. Wyse's Smart Card Add-On Software and Smart Card Manager provide added security, speed and flexibility for environments such as healthcare, banking and government, where information lock down is required and the security of information is vital. Smart cards are credit card-sized devices that store valuable data including user identification and authentication.

Increased Security for Healthcare, Banking and Government

As governmental, financial and healthcare sectors move toward electronic methods of secure access to information, the need for fast, secure solutions becomes critical. For example, since the U.S. Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), healthcare providers have been seeking out new technologies to ensure the secure and private transmission of administrative transactions and patient records. Many healthcare providers are already utilizing Wyse Winterm thin clients, where all software and information is stored on a central server, increasing virus resistance, security, and lowering the total cost of ownership. With the new smart card add-on solution, doctors with the proper authorization can quickly access secure data such as patient records as they move from one exam room to another, and one patient to another.

Introducing Smart Card Solutions for the Winterm 3000

With local Smart Card Add-On software, users can automatically launch their RDP or ICA sessions without the need to enter their logon multiple times, saving time and increasing productivity. Previously, the log-on process involved three steps, local log on, ICA and the server. The new software allows the user to skip the first two steps, requiring only one password, while increasing the security of vital data.

The Winterm Smart Card Manager is a simple and flexible platform, which allows the administrator to program the Smart Cards to meet the specific security needs of the company or organization. The Smart Card Manager allows administrators to customize the level of security and speed demanded by environments where the secure lock down of information is required. For example, the administrator can assign personal identification numbers (PINs) to the smart cards, protecting information and guaranteeing that only the assigned user can access information, even if the card is lost.
